INFORMATION SHEET

THE CLUB

The Devonport Aero Club is located in the General Aviation Complex at Devonport Airport, approximately 6km east or a 10 minute drive from the City of Devonport.

The Club was established in the 1960’s and was incorporated in 1985.

The major objectives of the Club are to provide services to members and to promote aviation to the community. Numerous social activities are held throughout the year along with pilot nights, seminars and industry visits to keep members current and up to date with developments in aviation.

The Club encourages regular flying and skills development through monthly flying activities and fly-aways, which also help satisfy currency requirements.

Membership comes from a wide range of experience levels, including students, private GA (General Aviation) and RAA (Recreational Aviation Australia) pilots, commercial pilots, helicopter pilots, flying instructors both GA & RAA and Regular Passenger Transport (RPT) pilots. We are also fortunate to have a LAME (Licensed Aviation Maintenance Engineer) and a DAME (Designated Aviation Medical Examiner) among our membership. Less experienced pilots and students can gain invaluable advice and help from the more senior pilots in the Club. This interaction is greatly encouraged in the Club environment and is one of the many benefits of becoming a member.

FACILITIES & SERVICES

The Devonport Aero Club operates from purpose-built Club Rooms opened in 2001.

Members and guests have exclusive use of the rooms, which include a fully equipped kitchen with tea and coffee making facilities. Cold drinks and snacks are also available for sale. The Club Rooms provide an ideal location to relax before or after flights, pre-flight planning and for meetings and social functions.

A computer is available to access the National Aeronautical Information Processing System (NAIPS) allowing users to obtain briefing material, weather forecasts and submit flight plans. A live digital display of the Devonport Airport automatic weather information is also provided.

We have a large screen television, DVD and VCR player with a selection of aviation videos, or just keep track of the game scores between flights.

The Club maintains membership of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and offers discounted individual membership to Club members.

ACTIVITIES

The Aero Club conducts monthly flying activities to maintain and develop members’ flying skills. These activities are conducted with a qualified flying instructor, and are an inexpensive way to keep your flying current.

Regular Pilot Nights are organised to refresh members’ knowledge on aviation topics and keep them up to date on new developments. These events are often combined with a social function.

Barbeques, pizza nights, fly-aways, dinners and other social outings are also a regular feature on the calendar of events.

The Club offers a flying training scholarship most years and also has a Junior Flyers Programme to encourage young people to participate in aviation.

Many club members own their own aircraft and you will find them out flying somewhere most fine weekends. They are usually more than happy to take other members along for a ride, and pass on their experience to students learning to fly.

Flying training is conducted on most days, weather dependant, at Devonport airport by Peter Reed (Skyflyte) and John McBryde (each RAA) and Rob Sharman (Ariel Aviation) (RAA and GA).

DEVONPORT AIRPORT

The Devonport Airport is an ideal facility for general aviation. It is located in a Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF 126.9) zone combined with Wynyard Airport, and has two runways. The main east-west runway is sealed (1,838m x 45m) the north-south runway, available in the summer months, is grass (880 x 30). The Club Rooms are located immediately adjacent the General Aviation Apron allowing aircraft parking right out front, with the grass runway only a few more metres away.

Qantas Link and Rex operate regular passenger transport (RPT) flights from the main terminal.
